East Whiteland approves demo Pierce fire engine purchase as staffing questions prompt move toward full‑time coverage

The East Whiteland Board of Supervisors voted unanimously June 11 to purchase a demonstration Pierce fire engine and pursue upfitting, township officials said.
Chief Greg Lewis outlined the proposal: the demo engine is available now, and the manufacturer will handle upfitting, graphics and modifications; delivery could occur in approximately two months. The unit's base cost is described as slightly under $1 million, with upfitting estimated at roughly $100,000.
Chief Lewis said the selected vendor is part of the Co-Stars cooperative purchasing program and that an RFP process preceded the recommendation. "The manufacturer would handle all upfitting, graphics, and modifications," Lewis said.
Resident Kyle Sheridan asked whether volunteer companies historically purchased such equipment and whether this purchase signals reduced volunteer involvement. The board and staff said the township is working to maintain a meaningful volunteer role even as it hires full-time firefighters to ensure 24/7 coverage. Mr. Orlow noted the township's need to hire full‑time staff in light of recruitment challenges for volunteers.
Questions about who will handle long-term repairs and maintenance remain under discussion, officials said. The motion to approve the purchase was made by Rich Orlow, seconded by Peter Fixler, and passed unanimously.
