On May 20 the Borough Council adopted Resolution #104-2026 urging the New Jersey Legislature to defeat bill S-1836. The resolution states that municipalities are best positioned to plan for local needs through their master plans and reexamination processes and asserts the proposed legislation would permit conversion of underutilized properties to mixed-use developments, reduce required parking near transit, permit certain accessory dwelling units and enable some religious and nonprofit conversions to inclusionary developments, thereby bypassing the local planning process.
The resolution cites concerns that S-1836 would require only 20% of units be affordable in qualifying projects while allowing increased density and height without local review, and it characterizes the bill as an assault on municipal autonomy. The council directed that copies of the resolution be forwarded to state legislators and the governor, including Senator Benjie Wimberly and Governor Mikie Sherrill, and to the New Jersey State League of Municipalities.
