Police chief submits squad vehicle quotes, council refers decision to Police Committee

Police Chief Bobby Berndt told the New York Mills City Council on April 14 that the department received two state‑bid vehicle quotes for a replacement squad: a Chevrolet Silverado with delivery price $56,100 and a Ford F150 priced at $55,145 after the state bid discount. Chief Berndt said wrap and light installation costs would add to the purchase price and asked the council to refer the matter to the Police Committee for a detailed comparison of specifications.

Berndt also reported the department responded to 234 calls for service in March, has received two full‑time and one part‑time applications for the open officer position, and is operating on an amended schedule until a new hire is made. The Police Committee will review applications and compare vehicle specs before making a recommendation to council, according to the minutes.

Councilor Hammond moved to accept either of the proposed quotes contingent on the Police Committee’s recommendation after comparing specifications; Councilor Maki seconded the motion and it carried by unanimous vote. The minutes note that funds had been budgeted in a reserve account the prior year for the purchase but that installation and wrap costs were not included in the quoted prices.

No final purchase order was recorded in the minutes; the committee referral is the next procedural step recorded by council.
