The New Germany City Council on July 16 authorized a $16,300 fee to SEH to prepare an application for $2.2 million in federal wastewater funding that is currently earmarked for the city.
Jessica Hedin of engineering firm SEH told the council the city faces wastewater pond capacity issues and that a full upgrade would cost roughly $9.9 million, with a facility plan estimated at about $500,000. Hedin said the $2.2 million is earmarked for New Germany but officials must still apply through EPA processes and provide any required environmental documentation.
Councilmember Thomas Mielke moved to approve the $16,300 SEH fee; Councilmember Kevin Grove seconded and the motion carried, 5-0. The council approved using SEH to complete the application process and any immediate environmental items SEH may request.
The decision commits the city to pay SEH for application work; it does not authorize construction or guarantee receipt of the $2.2 million. The timeline and next steps for the facility plan and any project design were not specified in the minutes.
The council took the action during the Water/Sewer report; Justin Black, the city engineer, introduced himself at the same time to the newly seated council members.
