The Long Prairie City Council on Monday confirmed Fire Chief Dan Laumeyer for 2024, approved the department's financial report and 2024 budget, and approved a request to allow a former firefighter to return as a part‑time volunteer.
Mayor Jodi Dixon moved and Council member Clint Krueger seconded the appointment of Dan Laumeyer as Fire Chief for 2024; the motion passed with Council member Jim Kreemer recorded as abstaining. Administrator Ted Gray presented the Fire Department’s 2023 financial report and the proposed 2024 budget; the council approved the financials and budget but agreed to continue discussion on a proposed wage increase at the Feb. 5 council meeting.
Fire Chief Laumeyer also told the council the department will assist with the Crashed Ice Demo Derby on Jan. 20 and reported the department’s SCBA compressor has reached the last certification cycle; the department is pursuing a grant to replace the system. Laumeyer asked the council to consider charging a fee for medical assists to offset increased department costs, a policy question the council did not resolve Monday.
Separately the council approved a motion to allow Omar Zamora to rejoin the department as a part‑time volunteer firefighter, conditioned on meeting all firefighter bylaw requirements and with a position review by May 15, 2024.
