Historic commission creates working subcommittee to research Gales Ferry district

The Ledyard Historic District Commission voted to establish a working subcommittee to research and document historic properties in the Gales Ferry area south of the two recognized historic districts.

The motion was made by a commission member and seconded; the vote was recorded by voice as “all in favor.” Chair Anne Roberts Peterson confirmed the commission will name members and select a chair for the new working group.

The action followed a presentation by guest Dave Schroeder, who outlined the statutory standard for village-district or historic-district designation and urged the commission to set clear, researchable criteria. “So far… it has to be of distinctive character or historical importance,” Schroeder said, arguing that the town can identify areas of local significance even if they would not meet National Register thresholds.

Commissioners described local examples — older farmsteads, Craftsman-era houses, the Bill Perkins House and other properties along Long Cove Road — as possible subject matter for research. Several members said the goal is to assemble documentation to support a recommendation into the town’s plan of conservation and development or to create a local registry if national recognition is not feasible.

Commission discussion emphasized outreach before any formal listing: members noted property owners’ consent may be necessary for some applications and suggested contacting owners early to collect family histories, deeds and other documentation. The commission also discussed forming the subcommittee with both commissioners and non-member volunteers to share research work.

The subcommittee’s charge is to research and document historic properties, recommend criteria for inclusion, and prepare materials that could be used for town-level planning documents or local designation. The commission did not set a firm deadline; members said the working group will meet and report back to the commission in a future meeting, and that membership and a chair will be confirmed soon.

The commission’s vote followed an extended discussion of benefits and responsibilities of local historic districts versus village districts and emphasized balancing preservation goals with property owners’ willingness to participate.
