The Chambersburg Area School District board voted to approve two literacy coach positions intended to advance the district’s reading-by-third-grade goals. Administration said the district has invested nearly $1,000,000 in the initiative and is seeking these positions to sustain and expand professional development across classrooms.
Superintendent Bigger described the coaches as a higher-level role focused on professional development and Tier 1 instruction support; the positions will help teachers implement the science-of-reading practices and model instruction. "These two positions get us close" to sustaining the initiative, the superintendent said, and certification requirements are pending review by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).
Board members emphasized that the coaches are intended to complement classroom teachers, reading specialists and intervention personnel—filling a role that models instruction and supports implementation of new materials. One board member noted enthusiasm for the positions while asking administration to confirm remaining funding and timelines before the start of the school year.
The motion to approve the hire was moved and seconded during the consent agenda discussion; certification is pending PDE review and the district will finalize numbers and post job descriptions once certifications are confirmed.
