The Long Prairie City Council on Dec. 18 approved a resolution calling a public hearing for Jan. 16, 2024 on a proposed tax abatement for a planned three-story, 61-unit, market-rate workforce housing project on 4th Street.
City materials and Administrator Ted Gray say the project is approximately 87,150 square feet and that the city proposes to abate property taxes imposed by the city in order to finance the Improvements. The developer would receive $200,000 to offset development expenses; city materials say remaining abated taxes would be used toward future housing development opportunities within Long Prairie. The council cited authority under Minnesota Statutes sections 469.1812–469.1815 (the Abatement Act).
The council called the hearing by adopting Resolution 23-12-18-34; Mayor Jodi Dixon moved the action and Council member David Wright seconded. Notice is to be published in the city’s official newspaper not fewer than 10 nor more than 30 days before the hearing, per the resolution. The resolution states the council may approve the abatement only after the public hearing required by statute.
