Waterfront Park construction nears finish; grand opening set for April 11

City staff told the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee on March 10 that Waterfront Park construction is approaching completion and that a grand opening is planned for April 11.
“90% of the trees are in, the low level landscaping is going in right now... The deadline that the park opening is next week, so that's why this rush toward the end by the contractor,” Deputy City Manager Jeremiah Glisten said. He added that lifelines and bollards will be installed next week and that the play structure is still in production.
Glisten said the Shrimp Monument and a picnic table are expected to be set the week before the opening and that the youth advisory council is assisting with artistic elements and naming related features. He also said the contractor is moving toward a target opening date even as other work farther up the corridor will continue and some construction may run into mid‑July.
Committee members asked about the play structure procurement; staff said the structure has been ordered and is in production and offered to email the committee the final decision.
The city also plans events around the opening, including concerts and family activities. Staff asked members to invite community members and said a bar‑opening and other special events are being scheduled separately.
What’s next: staff will confirm play‑structure delivery timing in writing to the committee and will provide logistics and event details ahead of the April 11 opening.
