Long Prairie council green-lights tourism boost, EDA sponsorship and routine licenses

The Long Prairie City Council unanimously approved multiple budgetary and operational items at its Feb. 5 meeting, including increased tourism support, sponsorships, personnel adjustments and event licensing.
Acting Mayor David Wright moved and the council approved increasing the city’s tourism contribution to $5,000 annually to reflect expanded duties performed by the tourism representative (identified as Lu). The council also approved a contract for Community Development Services between the Long Prairie Economic Development Authority and the Long Prairie Area Chamber of Commerce; the motion passed unanimously.
Council member Jim Kreemer moved and the council approved increasing the city’s sponsorship to the Todd County Development Corporation by $5,000 to a total of $7,500, making the city a Diamond Partner Sponsor; that motion carried unanimously.
Personnel and license actions recorded without dissent included a salary correction to $20.40 for Ian Sanchez and issuance of a Transient Merchant License to Amos Yoder for 04/01/2024–04/01/2025. The Long Prairie Lions received a liquor license for the Polar Plunge event scheduled for Feb. 24, 2024 at Lake Charlotte Beach.
Police Chief Ryan Hanson introduced a proposal to create a Community Service Officer position (starting wage proposed at $19.78/hour) intended to staff ordinance enforcement, assist on medical calls and provide traffic control while recruits complete training. Council member Jim Kreemer asked that the council consider the budgetary implications, and the council moved the proposal to the Feb. 13 work session for Chief Hanson to discuss funding and duties.
All motions recorded at the meeting were approved by voice vote with unanimous support from the four council members present (Acting Mayor David Wright, Jim Kreemer, Clint Krueger, Lilah Gripne). The council set the next work session for Feb. 13, 2024 at 6:30 p.m. to review administration staffing and the Community Service Officer proposal, and the next regular meeting is scheduled for Feb. 20, 2024.
