Madelia council approves consent items, permits, hires and schedules cannabis hearing

On April 25, 2025, the Madelia City Council approved a suite of routine and administrative items, including two resolutions, personnel changes, local permits and the 2024 audit.
The council approved Resolution 2025-08 authorizing St. Mary's Parish to hold a bingo and raffle and passed Resolution 2025-09 granting a lawful gambling premises permit to the Madelia Fire & Relief Association to operate at Embar's Bar and Lounge. Council also approved a Board of Adjustment recommendation for a sign request ("Lynon Sky 14"), accepted the 2024 audit and approved three food-truck licenses after staff reported background checks were complete and noted the single-day fee is $25 and the annual fee $100.
In personnel actions, the council voted to hire Wade Johnson as public works and utility manager and approved moving John Tierney to the wastewater superintendent position. The council also approved updated fire department standard operating procedures, which staff said had last been revised in 1998 and mainly refresh accountability provisions.
The council scheduled a public hearing on Ordinance 115 (cannabis) for May 12 at 6 p.m. and agreed to schedule five Planning & Zoning Commission recommendations for public hearings, with staff directed to consult Patrick about regulatory timing and whether to hold those hearings on a separate night to consolidate appearances.
