Organizer asks workshop for $12,800 reallocation to support Fork Days; vendors to handle food sales
Summary
At a workshop, an event organizer requested a $12,800 reallocation for Fork Days — reallocating $8,000 already committed to fireworks toward rental and restroom costs — and announced ending centralized food-and-beverage ticketing in favor of vendor-managed sales with a 15% fee.

An event presenter asked the workshop to continue supporting Fork Days with a $12,800 allocation, saying $8,000 already committed by Madelia Light and Power will cover fireworks this year and organizers want $10,000 for rental of tables, chairs, lighting and tents and $2,800 for portable restrooms.
The request was presented as a reallocation rather than a new budget increase. The presenter said, “we're not seeking any more funding for fireworks because they held over last year's,” and explained the change in funding lines reflects extra tent rental for an all‑school reunion this year.
The presenter told the panel the event will stop selling centralized food‑and‑beverage tickets because holding roughly $80,000 in cash at the park poses a financial risk and ticket sales require about 200 volunteers. “The point of having over $80,000 worth of cash sitting down in there on the weekend is just very scary in my thoughts,” the presenter said. Instead, vendors will manage their own sales; organizers are asking vendors to remit 15% of total sales this year (previously organizers took a 20% cut from ticket redemptions).
Organizers said they consulted with nearby event operators about vendor agreements and adapted elements of that contract for Fork Days. The presenter also said volunteers from the organizer’s board will staff traffic control for a detour on Second Street if needed; the transcript records that Laura Thorson agreed to stand with lights to direct people.
The presenter summarized that the $12,800 request is a reallocation of prior support rather than an overall budget increase, noting rental costs should fall next year so fireworks funding could return. No formal vote or approval of the $12,800 request is recorded in the transcript.
A member then moved to close the workshop; a second was recorded and the meeting was closed after a voice vote in which participants said “I.”
