Winfield council approves property purchase, renews two liquor licenses and sets Halloween event

At its Aug. 14 meeting the Winfield City Council approved buying 120 S. Locust Street, renewed liquor licenses for Casey’s and the Welcome Inn, and set Halloween festivities for Oct. 31. The council also noted a pool audit score of 100% and welcomed a new officer.
The Winfield City Council on Aug. 14 approved several routine items: the purchase of the property at 120 S. Locust Street, liquor license renewals for Casey’s and the Welcome Inn, and the date and time for the city’s Halloween Fest and trick-or-treat hours.
Resolution 05-2025 to authorize the purchase of 120 S. Locust Street passed on a motion by Brandy Smith, seconded by David Pieart; the vote was recorded as 5-0. The council approved liquor license renewals for Casey’s and the Welcome Inn on separate motions by Jennifer Lemke with Brandy Smith seconding; both votes were unanimous.
Council also set the Halloween events for Thursday, Oct. 31, with a wiener roast from 4:30–6 p.m. followed by trick-or-treat from 6–8 p.m. The council approved the schedule unanimously.
In departmental reports, JR Herrick noted the municipal pool’s annual audit returned a score of 100%. Mayor Willie Bender welcomed newly sworn officer Scott Roen and announced that Zeke Nebel will begin as public works assistant on Sept. 3. The mayor said he had a Zoom call with the EPA about next steps for congressional funding of the city’s wastewater treatment plant (WWTP).
The meeting adjourned at 6:16 p.m.; the next regular session is set for Sept. 11, 2024.
