Wemiga Waste asks Winfield to switch to cart pickup; contract extension to be presented in January

At the Dec. 11 meeting, Lynn Whaley of Wemiga Waste told the Winfield City Council that insurance and coverage issues require the company to move away from hand trash pickup. Whaley said Winfield is the only one of about 26 communities Wemiga serves that still uses hand pickup and that Wemiga would purchase carts if the city agrees to extend the contract.
Council did not vote on the request at the Dec. 11 meeting. Whaley said she will present a contract-extension proposal at the council’s January meeting for council consideration. The company’s request signals a pending operational change that would move the city to automated cart pickup if the council approves terms.
Council members did not record a formal vote on this item at the Dec. 11 session; the matter remains pending for the January meeting and will require a formal contract decision if council chooses to proceed.
