Decatur council hears public safety hiring updates, new GIS maps and schedules recognition for former mayor

At the Nov. 4 City of Decatur Common Council meeting, Police Chief Kevin Gerber reported that agility testing for police applicants was held the prior Saturday and that nine people are being evaluated to fill an open position on the force.
Fire Chief Jeff Sheets said interviews are underway for firefighter vacancies; six candidates remain under consideration and the list is expected to be narrowed to four in the near term.
Curt Witte, Building and Zoning Superintendent, said the city installed new ordnal software to improve use of geographic information and produced updated city boundary maps — the first such update since 2012 — including a large mounted map in Council Chambers. Operations Superintendent Matt Schultz was recognized on his appointment and thanked police and fire personnel for their assistance with the funeral procession for former Mayor John Schultz. Mayor Rickord said the council will formally recognize former Mayor Schultz at the Nov. 18 meeting and invited family members to attend.
No votes were taken on hiring items; department heads reported for informational purposes.
