Decatur delays applying for state bicycle and pedestrian planning grant amid tight deadline

Ehlerding told the council the final application date is Nov. 14, 2025, and emphasized the opportunity was a planning grant that required no application costs.
Councilmembers and Mayor Rickord voiced interest in expanding the city’s trail system, but several members cited the short time to prepare a proposal and a desire to consult existing trail plans before committing. After discussion, the council did not authorize staff to submit an application at this time and directed that current plans be pulled and reviewed for potential future application.
The presentation left open the option for the city to apply later if staff and council can prepare a stronger submission; no motion was made on Nov. 4.
Next steps: staff to locate and circulate existing trail plans and background materials before the Nov. 18 meeting if council wishes to revisit the grant opportunity.
