Lenox council sets $7,000 minimum bid, schedules hearing for sale of 205 South Walnut

The Lenox City Council agreed Aug. 12 to set a $7,000 minimum bid and to accept sealed bids without a building requirement for the city-owned lot at 205 South Walnut.

City Administrator Allison Kitzman said the house on the property has been demolished and the city has incurred “approximately $7,000 in expenses.” She told the council that a shed or garage could not be built on the parcel unless it adjoins another property, and cautioned that, with the demolition costs, “the City may take a loss.”

Council member Tull argued that requiring a buyer to build on the lot would be unfair given the condition of the neighboring parcel. Council member Nelson proposed setting the minimum bid at $7,000 with no building requirement; the council agreed. Kitzman said sealed bids will be due by Sept. 9, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. and will be opened at the Sept. 9 council meeting.

Nelson made a motion to set a public hearing on the sale for Sept. 9 at 5:30 p.m.; Peterson seconded and the motion carried. The council did not adopt any additional building requirements or minimum improvements as part of the action.

The decision now moves the matter to a public hearing where further public input and any final sale terms will be considered.
