Calhoun County supervisors establish county compensation board, set appointment deadline

The Calhoun County Board of Supervisors on July 16 unanimously approved Resolution 2024-21 to establish a County Compensation Board to help set county officer compensation.

The board adopted the resolution after a motion by Supervisor Scott Becker, seconded by Vice Chairman Scott Jacobs; the motion carried with all supervisors voting in favor. The resolution cites Iowa Code Section 331.905, as amended in 2024 by Senate File 2442, as its authority and states the board will be composed of seven county residents.

Under the adopted terms, two members will be appointed by the Board of Supervisors and one member each will be appointed by the county auditor, county attorney, county recorder, county treasurer and county sheriff. The resolution directs the elected officials to submit their respective appointments to the Board of Supervisors by November 15, 2024 and specifies initial staggered terms: the representatives of Supervisor, Attorney, Treasurer, and Auditor will serve initial four-year terms while the representatives of Supervisor, Sheriff, and Recorder will serve initial two-year terms. The resolution applies retroactively to July 1, 2024.

The resolution’s text was presented during the meeting and read into the record; no amendments or roll-call objections were recorded. The board’s action followed routine agenda business and engineer updates earlier in the session.
