The Winterset City Council on May 4 approved Resolution No. 2026-24 to increase sewer rates for all accounts by 10% effective July 1, 2026 and by an additional 10% effective July 1, 2027. The resolution states the city’s sewer facility has reached the end of its useful life and requires renovations and reconstruction. It notes the city intends to enter long-term financing with a USDA loan and that current operating revenue does not cover projected operating expenses and future debt obligations. The resolution authorizes the Mayor and City Administrator to execute the increases on the first billing in July 2026.
During public comment a resident from 721 E Filmore submitted an emailed objection to the sewer rate increase; no council member recorded a dissenting vote. Council Member Fairholm cited obligations for future debt payment and that rates had not been increased for several years.
