Dubois County approves Samsara fleet-tracking contract, greenlights Community Crossings paving list and bridge work

The Dubois County Commissioners on Jan. 8 approved a package of highway measures that includes a new fleet-tracking contract, an application-ready list of roads for a state paving grant and initial work on several bridge rehabilitation projects.
Highway Engineer Brent Wendholt presented the department's 2024 activity summary and the Dubois County Safety Action Plan, which the board approved. Wendholt then sought approval to move the department's fleet-tracking service from Verizon to Samsara. The board approved a Samsara agreement at a year-one cost of $7,445.60 for licensing, hardware and accessories; payments beginning in year two were listed as $7,341.60. County Attorney Gregory S. Schnarr reviewed the contract before the vote. The board also authorized staff to terminate the existing Verizon contract and to notify Verizon in writing.
Wendholt presented the list of roadways the county plans to include in a 2025-01 Community Crossings Matching Grant (CCMG) paving application, including Schnellville Road (SR 162 to Santine Road), Old Petersburg Road (SR 56 to Pike County line), Dubois Cuzco Road (850 East to Cuzco Road South), Old Road 45 (US 231 to 600 North) and other segments; the board approved the list unanimously. Wendholt said he intends to seek a financial commitment from the county council’s LIT-ED fund and will use available MVH funds to support projects.
On bridges, Wendholt reported that Bridge #107 and Bridge #240 need deck rehabilitation and that he will request $200,000 from County Council to fund design and construction; the board approved proceeding with those projects. For Bridge #78 the Council previously approved funding the design phase; Wendholt reported discussions with consultant America Structurepoint and was given consent to proceed after verifying the consultant fee remains adequate.
The board also approved a request from Highway Superintendent Donnie Lueken to allow site attendants at the Jasper, Huntingburg and Ireland recycling locations an extra 15 minutes at the end of their shift to remove contaminating items from the dumpsters. Lueken said the change will make attendants’ workdays 8.5 hours at those sites.
Next steps include finalizing Samsara contract documentation, sending a termination notice to Verizon, submitting the CCMG application and requesting County Council approval for the $200,000 bridge funding request.
