Dubois County on Nov. 18 authorized a financial commitment to pursue a Federal INDOT grant to upgrade guardrails and guard‑rail end treatments on 60 county bridges and agreed to advertise a separate appropriation for consultant design work on Bridge 78.
Highway Engineer Brent Wendholt told the Council the proposed Highway Safety Improvement Plan has an estimated total cost of $4,390,000 and is structured as a 90/10 federal‑local split, which would require the county to provide about $439,000. Wendholt said the cost estimate covers preliminary engineering, construction and construction engineering and that the county would budget its share over several years rather than at once.
The Council voted to approve a Letter of Financial Commitment to submit with the INDOT application; the motion was made by Ryan Craig, seconded by Meredith Voegerl, and carried unanimously. Wendholt also described the need to rehabilitate Bridge 78 over the Patoka River near 600 West and Division Road in Madison Township and requested an additional appropriation of $93,000 from the Cum Bridge fund for consultant design fees; the Council agreed to advertise that appropriation.
Next steps include submitting the grant application to INDOT with the county's financial commitment and publishing the advertisement for the Bridge 78 appropriation so the Council can consider the formal appropriation ordinance.
