Port Wentworth recognizes multiple awareness months; local groups thank council during public comment

Mayor Pro-Tem Gabrielle Nelson read multiple proclamations recognizing National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15–Oct. 15), Sickle Cell Awareness Month, National Hunger Awareness, Patriot Day and National Literacy Month.
During registered public comments, Mrs. Shepard and members of the Sickle Cell Association of Savannah thanked the council for recognizing Sickle Cell Awareness Month and emphasized the importance of education and support for affected families. Mary Croutch, representing Second Harvest, described local food-assistance efforts including Kids Café programs and mobile food pantries in Port Wentworth and urged volunteer involvement. Joe Higgins, representing the Veterans Council of Chatham County, spoke in honor of Patriot Day and described his active-duty service at the time of the attacks. Ambria Birksteiner, Regional Board Chair for Live Oak Public Library and founder of Operation One STEM at a Time, thanked the council for recognizing Literacy Month and described partnerships with libraries to provide STEM-focused programs.
