Port Wentworth — The City of Port Wentworth on Nov. 20 held a first reading of a proposed amendment to its zoning ordinance to define and allow data centers as a potential low-impact industrial use.
City Attorney Scott Robichaux told the council the proposal stems from conversations with partners interested in bringing data centers to existing industrial or warehouse properties. He said the amendment would not expand industrial zoning; rather, it would define “data center” and make that use allowable where industrial zoning already exists. Robichaux noted the item was added to the agenda after the usual advertising period, so Nov. 20 served as a first read; a public hearing and second read will occur next month along with Planning Commission review.
Robichaux said data centers are expected to generate far less truck traffic than typical industrial uses, but he emphasized that any specific project would still require full permitting and approvals. The council did not take final action; the amendment will return for public hearing and a formal vote at a later meeting.
