Sandstone planning panel recommends council approve vacation of platted right-of-way

The Sandstone Planning Commission on June 2 recommended that the City Council vacate a platted right-of-way on Block 3 of the Sandstone Townsite Company’s Third Addition.
Chair Randy Riley opened the meeting at 6:03 p.m. and, after a public hearing, the commission voted 4-0 to recommend council approval of the petition. Commissioners Bill Gaede and Steve Palmer moved to open the hearing at 6:04 p.m.; the hearing was closed at 6:07 p.m. following no public comment.
City Administrator Kathy George told the commission the platted right-of-way lies adjacent to five parcels and that the city does not own or maintain infrastructure within that strip. She said notices were published in the North Pine County News on May 21 and May 28 and were mailed to property owners within 350 feet; staff reported no written comments had been received as of Monday, June 1.
At the hearing, petitioners were identified in the record as Jason Eiffler, David Klar and Samuel Cummins. Under the city’s vacation process described to the commission, vacated platted right-of-way would be divided evenly among adjacent property owners if the council approves the request.
After discussion the commission took a formal vote. Commissioner Bill Gaede moved, Commissioner Amy Stafne seconded a motion recommending the City Council approve vacating the platted right-of-way; the motion carried, 4-0. Earlier procedural business included adoption of the agenda and approval of the Feb. 11, 2026 minutes, each by unanimous vote. The commission adjourned at 6:10 p.m.
The Planning Commission’s action is a recommendation; final authority to vacate the platted right-of-way rests with the Sandstone City Council. The council will consider the recommendation at a future meeting; the commission record did not specify a review date.
