Sandstone planning commission recommends city require rental licenses for vacation rentals

The City of Sandstone Planning Commission on Feb. 11, 2026 recommended that the City Council amend City Code 163.023 (Traditional Residential District – Interim Uses) and City Code 118.02 (Rental Housing – Definitions) to require vacation rental properties to obtain a rental license.
Commissioners opened a public hearing on the proposal and heard staff explain that vacation rentals were discussed at an Oct. 2025 meeting but were not included in the earlier public hearing process. The Planning Commission published notice in the North Pine County News and mailed notices to property owners within 350 feet; no written or oral public comments were received at the Feb. 11 hearing.
Following the hearing, the commission voted 5-0 to forward a recommendation to the City Council to amend the cited code sections so vacation rentals fall under the city’s rental licensing requirements. That recommendation is advisory; the City Council would need to enact code changes for them to take effect.
Next steps: the commission’s recommendation will be forwarded to the City Council for consideration and possible ordinance language. No timeline for council action was provided at the meeting.
