Police report: 1,010 incident reports in April; council approves recruitment start; public works reports several street and park projects

Police Chief Joe Jensen told the Sauk Centre City Council that the department logged 1,010 incident case reports in April, completed state-mandated training and updated department policies. Jensen said a recent school threat “absorbed a lot of officer manpower and resources,” and that the Sauk Centre School Board has requested a larger police presence for the upcoming school year; he said funding discussions between the school board and police department will follow.
Jensen also informed the council of an officer resignation: Officer Moldenhauer has announced his resignation effective October 2026. Chief Jensen requested authorization to begin recruitment with the goal of hiring in July and having the new officer on the road in September; by general consent the council authorized staff to move forward with the recruitment process.
City Administrator Vicki Willer presented the Public Works monthly activity report, noting that flashing crosswalk signs are installed and operational at Ash Street (by the public school) and Sinclair Lewis Avenue (by Holy Family School); road patching, crack filling and the first round of street sweeping are underway; a storm sewer repair on 1st Street North was completed; the splash pad and fountain are operational; docks have been installed; and summer mowing and other seasonal park maintenance are in progress. Willer said the city is awaiting scheduling for sealcoat/slurry work on Ash Street.
An Airport Board update reported that a federal/state land-purchase grant is being finalized, the CIP was updated to include new FAA runway/taxiway access requirements, and planning continues for a July 19 Car Show/Fly In at Sauk Centre Municipal Airport.
During public comment, resident Jeff Miller, who lives near the proposed bypass road, stated opposition to the project and requested a special meeting for affected property owners. The minutes do not record further council discussion or action on that request.
The council's next steps include moving forward with police recruitment, scheduling contractor meetings where applicable, and continuing coordination on public works projects and airport planning.
