Maple Grove lake panel approves 2026 work plan and advances draft lake regulation changes for outside review

The Maple Grove Lake Quality Commission on Feb. 18 approved its 2026 work plan, accepted January meeting minutes and voted to forward proposed changes to city lake regulations for review by regional partners and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
The actions came at a meeting at the Maple Grove Government Center where commissioners outlined a year of planned work that includes Lake Improvement Program (LIP) reviews, stream restoration updates, 2025 water-quality monitoring and watershed partnerships, three lake tours and hosting the NPDES MS4 annual meeting. Martin Paavola moved to approve the work plan and Nancy Bergstrand seconded; the motion passed by voice vote with all in favor.
Derek Asche of the City of Maple Grove summarized the proposed regulation changes, noting the draft updates definitions and clarifies dock rules, water-obstacle permits and watercraft regulations. Asche also noted the draft currently does not include a 9 a.m. no-wake restriction. Commissioners voted to approve advancing the draft for outside review; Brennon O’Callaghan made the motion with Martin Paavola seconding, and the motion passed by voice vote.
Commissioner George Schneider moved, and Adam Heeren seconded, approval of the minutes from the Jan. 21 meeting; that motion also passed unanimously by voice vote.
The commission directed that the proposed regulation changes be provided to Three Rivers Park District, Hennepin County and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for review and comment, and noted that a public hearing and final consideration by the Maple Grove City Council are required before any regulatory change takes effect.
The commission set its next meeting for March 18, 2026, and adjourned at 7:39 p.m.
