The decision followed nominations from board members: Broten Jr. nominated Wolfe and Kaufman nominated Ryan Harter. Nominations then ceased and, to allow Broten Jr. to second his own nomination, Vice President Auel temporarily relinquished the chair. After the vote, Broten Jr. returned the gavel to Vice President Auel.
During the public comment period, Michael Gruetzmacher spoke in support of Ryan Harter, and Harter provided his background in public schools and asked to be considered for appointment. The board later considered but did not approve a separate motion to appoint Harter; that motion died for lack of a second.
