Planning board seeks rezoning of landfill parcel to light industrial

Mary, the planning-board secretary, presented a rezoning application to change roughly 100 acres — including the county landfill parcel — from agricultural zoning to light industrial. The application includes a revised legal description and a drawn map; cadastral mapping has not yet been updated to reflect the change.
Richard Carriers stated he was present both as a Solid Waste representative and as a planning-board member and reviewed the parcel description and the sections affected. Commissioners were advised that the planning board will coordinate the required public-notice period and a public hearing under the county’s growth policy process, after which the county commission must formally act.
A motion to accept the planning-board materials and proceed with required notice passed by voice vote with no opposition. Commissioners asked staff to ensure two weeks’ notice and publication in the local paper, and to combine the rezoning hearing with an upcoming interstate engineering meeting for the growth policy update where appropriate.
Next steps: planning staff will publish notice and schedule the hearing; commissioners will receive the finalized materials and be asked to sign off following statutorily required public notice.
