The Town of Horseheads voted June 10 to ask Chemung County to lower posted speeds on two roads after receiving letters and a petition from residents worried about speeding and safety.
Resolution #111, moved by Supervisor Donald J. Fischer and seconded by Councilman Arthur Laurey, recommends reducing the speed limit on the Town portion of Jackson Creek Road from 35 mph to 30 mph. The board noted several resident letters that reported unsafe speeds on the county-owned road.
Separately, the board considered a petition from Church Street, Breesport residents, who said Twin Tiers Christian Academy is located on that road. Resolution #112 (motion by Fischer, seconded by Laurey) recommends that Chemung County reduce the speed limit on the Town portion of Church Street to 25 mph and consider installing speed bumps at key points.
Both resolutions are recommendations to Nicolas Vosburg, Public Works Commissioner for Chemung County; the Town does not control county road speed limits and cannot implement speed bumps without county approval. The board approved both recommendations unanimously.
