Maurice council approves extra tree-removal funds, raises community center rates and sets cropland bids

The Maurice City Council on Jan. 21 approved several routine and operational measures, including an $8,500 supplement to tree-removal work, increases to Community Center rental rates and a call for sealed bids on a city cropland parcel.
Roger De Weerd, a council member, moved to approve the posted agenda; Sharon Vermeer seconded and the motion passed "All Ayes." Isaac Holtrop moved to approve the consent agenda, which included the Dec. 17, 2024 minutes, the treasurer’s report and bills; William Korver seconded and that motion also passed unanimously. The clerk reported total disbursements of $40,860.67 and total receipts of $20,558.61 for December, including a $20,000 payment to SRC Overhead Door labeled "Revolving Loan." Lana Bruxvoort is listed in the minutes as City Clerk.
The council approved an additional $8,500 to Schwebach Tree Service for removal of dead and diseased trees in city right-of-ways. The motion to add the funds was made by Roger De Weerd and supported by Isaac Holtrop; the vote was documented as All Ayes.
On property business, Sharon Vermeer moved and Cindy Larsen supported a motion to advertise for sealed bids for the Boyd Addition cropland; bids are scheduled to be opened at the council's Feb. 18, 2025 meeting. The motion passed unanimously.
The council also voted to raise the Community Center rental rates to $75 for events up to five hours and $150 for events over five hours. Isaac Holtrop moved the rate increase and Sharon Vermeer seconded; the motion passed All Ayes.
Council members discussed the 2025 Sioux County Community Grant and concluded there were no eligible projects to apply for at this time. The council also discussed fiscal year 2025/2026 budget expenditures during the meeting record; no final budget action or vote was recorded.
The meeting included a written report from Public Works Director Jeff Van Der Weide and a standard open-forum period during which no public comments were received. William Korver moved to adjourn; Isaac Holtrop seconded and the council adjourned. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Feb. 18, 2025.
