Prairie City approves school walking routes and crossing lights, discusses fireworks rules and cemetery policy

At its Aug. 14 meeting Prairie City’s council approved school-walking routes for the 2024 school year and authorized purchase of flashing crossing lights with the school district paying half the cost.
City Administrator Jerry Moore said he met with PCM district officials to discuss the routes; Derek Ingle moved to adopt the presented routes and Emily Simmons seconded. Council later approved the flashing-light purchase (motion by Simmons, second by Phil Holland).
During public comment Steve Zimmerman reported a failure of the public-address system at the recent Prairie Days event and suggested the city consider replacing its PA equipment. Linda Rossow addressed the council during a later agenda item and asked the city to amend its fireworks ordinance, expressing concern about property damage from debris and suggesting the city consider a designated area for fireworks instead of allowing use in congested neighborhoods. Council discussed other cities’ ordinances and staff suggested increasing public education about the existing ordinance on city channels leading up to holiday periods; no ordinance change was approved at this meeting.
Other routine items included approval of a $300 purchase of used bleachers, approval of a special-event application from the Prairie City Fire Association for a car show, and a revision to Waveland Cemetery rules removing the phrase "by the city or" as it relates to digging cremains burials.
