Northfield service superintendent reports salt-barn erosion, plans replacement and new online permitting

Service Department Superintendent Jason Walters told the Village of Northfield council on Jan. 25 that the back of the municipal salt barn has eroded, forcing staff to avoid filling it to capacity and to load and unload carefully. "The barn will be removed and replaced this off season," Walters said, and he said the cost of replacement will be included in this year’s budget.
Walters said Cloudpermit permitting software has been in use since the first of the year and is working ‘‘for the most part.’’ He described two public-access laptops placed in the entrance of 199 Ledge for in-person applicants. On snow operations, Walters said plow drivers push snow off road edges and try to distribute it equally onto properties; drivers do not replace mailboxes unless the truck actually strikes them, and replaced boxes are attributed to deteriorated or improperly installed posts rather than plowing force.
Why this matters: the salt-barn condition affects winter road maintenance capacity and budget planning; the Cloudpermit rollout changes how residents apply for permits. Walters said the barn replacement and any related capital expense will be reflected in the 2023 budget for council review.
