Northfield council adopts amended sign ordinance, confirms two appointments including village police dog

The Village of Northfield council unanimously adopted Ordinance No. 2023-03 on Feb. 8, 2023, amending Section 1280.20 of the Codified Ordinances dealing with nonconforming signs. Law Director Brad Bryan read the ordinance title; Councilmember Renell Noack moved to suspend the three-reading rule and, after a unanimous roll-call vote, Noack moved to adopt the ordinance with a second from Gary Vojtush.
The ordinance amendment adds the date the revamped sign ordinance was enacted and establishes a 10-year deadline for bringing nonconforming signs into compliance, as explained by Bryan during the reading. Council members present — Jesse Ferko, Renell Noack, Gary Vojtush, Nick Magistrelli and Alan Hipps — all voted yes on both motions. The clerk recorded the adoption as Ordinance No. 2023-03.
In other formal actions, council confirmed two mayoral appointments. Resolution No. 2023-04 affirmed Mayor Jennifer Domzalski's appointment of Stash Apana to the Recreation Board; the council suspended the three-reading rule and adopted the resolution by unanimous roll call. Resolution No. 2023-05 confirmed the Mayor/Director of Public Safety's appointment of Bunker Vom Logan Haus ("Bunk") as the village police dog; that resolution also passed unanimously after the suspension motion.
The meeting record shows routine procedural votes were unanimous; minutes from the Jan. 25 meeting were approved at the start of the session. Mayor Domzalski also reported personnel-related scheduling: IT proposals and two police chief interviews were set for the following day, with the goal of presenting candidates for council approval at the Feb. 22 meeting.
Council scheduled a budget work session for Feb. 15 and the Mayor said she would confirm department time slots and notify council by email. The meeting adjourned at 7:46 p.m.
