Northfield appoints Brian Zajac as police chief; council honors two retiring officers

The Village of Northfield council unanimously confirmed Brian Zajac as the village’s next police chief at its Feb. 22, 2023 meeting and adopted proclamations recognizing two retiring officers.

Law Director Brad Bryan read Resolution No. 2023-06, an emergency measure confirming Mayor Jennifer Domzalski’s appointment of Brian Zajac as chief of police. Council suspended the three-reading rule and adopted the resolution by unanimous roll-call votes. Mayor Domzalski announced a swearing-in ceremony for Chief Zajac at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24.

Council also adopted proclamations commending Chief John Zolgus and Sergeant Brian Zambach for their years of service to the village police department. Both proclamations were read by title by Law Director Bryan and approved by unanimous roll-call votes after motions by Councilperson Renell Noack (seconded by Jesse Ferko for the minutes approval and seconders as noted for each proclamation).

Mayor Domzalski used her report to ask the community to keep the families of the victims of the I Schumann & Co. building explosion and fire in their thoughts and to praise mutual-aid responses. Councilperson Gary Vojtush additionally asked for thoughts for the victims of a plane crash in Arkansas that carried investigators to the explosion site. "Everyone did what they needed to do in this unfortunate situation," the mayor said, praising the village's response and coverage of calls for neighboring departments.

No public remonstrances were recorded and Lt. Brian Zajac stated he had no report. The council meeting adjourned at 7:44 p.m.
