New Market council appoints Brian Moore, approves liquor license and sets tax hearing

NEW MARKET — The City of New Market council on Thursday unanimously approved a slate of routine actions including the appointment of Brian Moore to the council, approval of a liquor license, and scheduling a proposed tax hearing.
Mayor Pro-Tem Mike DeVoe called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Council members Larry McAlpin and Gene Chapman were present; Chandler Arnold was absent. City Superintendent Ben Fritz and City Clerk Megan Wright were also in attendance.
The council first approved the consent agenda, which covered the meeting agenda, minutes from January, claims for the city, museum and fire department, and reconciliations for general checking, the fire department, ARP, petty cash and utility accounts. The motion to approve the consent agenda was moved by Council member Larry McAlpin and seconded by Council member Gene Chapman; all members present voted in favor.
On new business, the council approved Resolution 2025-06 to appoint Brian Moore to the council. The motion to adopt the resolution was moved by Larry McAlpin and seconded by Gene Chapman and passed unanimously. City Clerk Megan Wright administered the Oath of Office to Brian Moore, who then took his seat on the council.
Following his appointment, Moore moved and Council member Gene Chapman seconded adoption of Resolution 2025-07 to grant a liquor license to Farmer's Mutual Town & Country. The resolution passed with all members present voting yes.
The council also set a Proposed Tax Hearing for Thursday, March 20, 2025, at 6:30 p.m.; the motion to schedule the hearing was moved by Gene Chapman and seconded by Brian Moore and carried unanimously. The council announced its next regular meeting for Thursday, March 20, 2025, at 7:00 p.m.
Larry McAlpin moved to adjourn; Gene Chapman seconded and the motion carried. No public comments or committee reports were recorded in the minutes for this meeting.
