Maxwell parks board approves agenda, minutes and outlines FY2027 priorities

The Maxwell Parks and Open Spaces Board approved its meeting agenda and two sets of prior minutes and set out a series of maintenance and small capital projects for the city’s FY2027 budget.
At its Feb. 2 meeting at City Hall, the board approved the agenda on a motion from board member Mike Gustafson, seconded by board member Deb Steele. The board then approved the Aug. 6, 2025 minutes (motion passed with three ayes; Derek Carter abstained) and the Jan. 15, 2026 minutes (motion passed with three ayes; Mike Gustafson abstained).
Chair Joelyn L. Gast presented a priority list of park projects for 2027 and asked that estimated costs be included where available. Items the board listed included repainting the Legion Park concession stand (estimated $1,000); relocating the dog park entrance; adding sand for a toy digger at City Park; installing pea gravel and a curb at Laffey Park; adding two posts at Scout Park to allow lanterns and a hammock (estimated $2,000); dog park agility equipment; design for a Heart of Iowa Nature Trail trailhead; replacement of an Arbor Day Legacy tree; tree planting and upkeep in support of Tree City USA (estimated $2,000); and markers for Legacy Trees. Several items were listed without estimates and board members asked that staff provide cost details when available.
Chair Gast also said she is collecting estimates to replace a broken light pole on Main Street and will report back when estimates are ready.
The board adjourned at 6:10 p.m. on a motion by Steele, seconded by Gustafson. The meeting record was attested by Clerk Carrie Heaps and signed by Chair Joelyn L. Gast.
