McCausland council appoints Rick Tague, approves ARPA-funded street work and generator maintenance deal

The McCausland City Council met Dec. 10, 2024, and unanimously approved a slate of administrative and infrastructure items, including an appointment to a vacant council seat and multiple ARPA-funded contracts.
Mayor William Gillespie opened the meeting at 6:00 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance. Present were councilmembers Schultz, Claussen and Stewart.
In the meeting’s primary business, councilmembers voted to appoint Rick Tague to the vacant council seat for the remainder of the term; the motion was moved by Schultz and seconded by Claussen and passed with all ayes. The council then approved the consent agenda, which included a liquor license for the Corner Market (motion moved by Schultz, seconded by Stewart; all ayes).
On capital and maintenance spending, the council approved a $25,745.75 bid from LL Pelling for 2025 street work. Schultz moved and Stewart seconded the motion; the council indicated the payment will come from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds and approved the motion unanimously. The council also approved a $2,950 bid from Advance Parking Lot Striping to repaint crosswalks and mark '25 MPH' on streets in spring; Stewart moved and Claussen seconded the motion, and the council voted all ayes.
Separately, the council noted it received a grant from the Scott County Regional Authority that will cover the full cost of a new generator for City Hall. Following that announcement, Stewart moved and Schultz seconded a motion to purchase a 10-year maintenance agreement for the generator at a cost of $3,050; the motion passed unanimously.
Staff reports during the meeting included a request from TOMRV to use the park next June, with a $125 donation offered; a public-works update that a sewer line issue is under investigation; completion of electrical work at the west siren; removal of hazardous trees; arrival of a small tractor; and consideration of updating additional light poles to support more holiday lighting. Parks and Recreation reported a well-attended Christmas party for 24 children and that the pavilion tree was lit after the event. Mayor Gillespie reminded councilmembers to review and submit budgets next month.
There were no public or additional council remarks. The meeting was adjourned at 6:19 p.m.
