Dixon County opened bids for the Waterbury South Bridge Project at 9:30 a.m. on June 9 but took no award decision, tabling the matter until the next meeting while staff complete a bid review.
County Engineer and Highway Superintendent Brian McDonald briefed the board on ongoing road and bridge work, highlighting plans for crack sealing and resurfacing the 5.5-mile stretch of Highway 116 between Highway 20 and Dixon. Chair Lisa Lunz and supervisors noted completed items in the county’s 1- and 6-year road and bridge programs and discussed ideas for next year; the board agreed to revisit project priorities at the July meeting.
The board approved multiple road-related administrative items: supervisors authorized transferring funds from the Road budget to Special Road Funds and approved a motion to purchase a semi-truck for the Roads Department. Road supervisors also moved to apply for a scrap-tire grant; if the grant is approved, the cleanup event would be held at the Allen Shop in July 2027. The minutes note past problems with illegal tire dumping at the shop and that gates have been installed to deter dumping.
The board approved a road maintenance agreement with Newcastle Township and authorized Great Plains Communications to occupy county right-of-way to install underground fiber-optic cable.
What happens next: County highway staff will complete a review of the Waterbury South Bridge bids and return a recommendation at the next regular meeting; the board left the award decision pending that review.
