Sudbury School Committee approves new Grade 7 math course progression for FY26

Karen Wolfson, Math Curriculum Coordinator, presented the proposal and described the intended pathway changes at the middle school. Committee members asked about the percentage of students anticipated to enroll in the newly proposed course, how long the existing sequence had been used, whether other districts use similar progressions and what supports would be in place for differentiated learners.
Vice Chair Meredith Gerson moved to approve the Grade 7 Math Proposal as presented, and Karyn Jones seconded the motion. "All in favor: 4-0. Motion carries," the committee recorded.
Members said they supported the proposal’s goals but raised concerns about double enrollment and the potential need for self-study options for some students. The administration agreed to monitor enrollment and placement patterns as the new progression is implemented.
The committee did not amend the proposal on the floor. The next procedural step is implementation planning by the district for FY26, including communication to families about placement and scheduling.
