Fort O Center staff introduce afterschool program as opening nears

Representatives of the Fort O Center on July 31 updated the Fort Oglethorpe City Council that their youth afterschool program is weeks from opening and introduced several staff members who will run daily operations.
"We've got two weeks left of remodeling before we're hopefully going to get our CO and all the things to open with the school year," said Ann Windam, who introduced herself as the new program manager for the Fort O Center. Program assistant Ariana Lower and program coordinator Steven Wakefield also introduced themselves and described the center’s free afterschool programming for middle‑ and high‑school students.
Windam told the council the Fort O Center will offer staffed, free afterschool activities and that the organizers will invite city officials to a ribbon‑cutting ceremony once final inspections and paperwork are complete. Staff said they expect to finish remodeling in the coming weeks and to open in time for the school year.
Council members responded with expressions of support and were offered tours of the new space. The Fort O Center emphasized partnerships with local schools and that the program's mission is to provide a free, staffed environment for students after school.
Next steps: the center plans a ribbon cutting and will coordinate final inspections, permitting and the certificate of occupancy with city staff prior to opening.
