Melbourne council approves two building permits, votes to remove split, damaged street trees

The Melbourne City Council approved two building permits at its Aug. 12 meeting after the session resumed following a brief suspension for an emergency call. The council granted a permit for a 30-by-50 one‑story building at 205 3rd Avenue (applicant Curtis Corwin) on a motion by Gary Fricke, seconded by Beth Smith, and approved a permit for an 18-by-22 shed at 214 Park Avenue (applicant Josiah Benbow) on a motion by Gaege Bracy, seconded by Beth Opperman; both motions passed unanimously.
During routine business the council revisited a July item on expired building permits and said one renewal request arrived too late for the agenda; the clerk will send follow‑up correspondence and the renewals will be listed on the September agenda.
Council members also inspected a split tree near 113 2nd Avenue and voted (mover: Gaege Bracy; seconder: Gary Fricke) to remove that tree and two additional damaged trees on Main Street. The council directed Fricke to contact Jose Zamora’s tree service to arrange the removals.
Other operational items discussed included pending curb stop replacements where owners have not yet acted and a reported broken curb by the bank that council members were asked to inspect ahead of the September meeting. Fire and EMS requested dedicated 'FIRE & EMS parking only' signs on the north side of 1st Street; the city clerk will check the ordinance and place the sign request on the September agenda.
The meeting was suspended at 7:05 p.m. when fire and first responders left for an emergency; it resumed at 8:20 p.m. with all members present. The council adjourned at 8:50 p.m.
