Parks staff told the council July 8 that two trees at Cass Park pose an immediate hazard and should be removed. Amanda, a parks staff member, said a maple near the ballpark fence has multiple large, leaning branches and an ash tree near the concession stands is leaning in a way that could cause it to fall onto buildings "within the next two years if not sooner." She said the city should seek bids for removal and stump grinding.
Council agreed to include the two trees in an upcoming bid package for park tree work, to solicit three bids, and to plan actual removal after the fall (to avoid conflicts with summer events and tournaments). Members acknowledged budget constraints but expressed urgency because of public-safety risk to players and spectators.
Amanda said the city will combine these hazardous removals with an existing tree-removal bid for other park trees to help control costs and get competitive pricing. Council asked staff to report back with bid results and recommended timing for removal.
