MERRILL, Iowa — The Merrill City Council completed a slate of routine actions on Jan. 20, approving the meeting agenda, amending prior minutes, adopting treasurer’s reports and passing several resolutions including the appointment and swearing-in of a city clerk.
The meeting opened at 6:00 p.m. and the council approved the agenda on a motion by Council member Hemmelman, seconded by Held, with a unanimous roll call of Conley, Held, Hemmelman, Hoyt and Rieken. The council then amended the Dec. 16, 2024 minutes to reflect that Hoyt moved to forgo Mid-Sioux funding for CY2025 (motion by Held, seconded by Hemmelman), and approved the treasurer’s reports for December 2024 (motion by Conley, seconded by Held).
Council member Hemmelman moved to approve the claims list dated Jan. 20, 2025; Conley seconded and the motion carried. The claims detail later presented in the meeting shows a claims list total of $49,291.69 and a payroll total of $12,907.94, with fund breakdowns for General Fund, Road Use Tax, Debt Service, Water and Sewer.
Under new business the council adopted RESOLUTION NO. 2025-1 (mayoral appointments) and RESOLUTION NO. 2025-2, the city clerk appointment; Mayor Norgaard administered the oath of office for the clerk. The council also adopted RESOLUTION NO. 2025-3 addressing fire protection service fees. All resolution motions passed by roll call with ayes recorded for each of the five council members.
