Red Oak City Council approves wage resolutions, claims, license renewal and event closures

Red Oak — At a July 1 Red Oak City Council meeting held at the Red Oak Fire Station, council members unanimously approved a package of routine personnel, financial and event items and heard multiple updates on city infrastructure and community events.
Mayor Shawnna Silvius called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m., and a roll call recorded Councilpersons Sharon Bradley, Brian Bills, Tim Fridolph and John Haidsiak as present (Councilperson Adam Hietbrink was absent). Council moved the agenda and approved it with a modification to the item order.
The council approved the consent agenda, which included minutes from the June 17 regular meeting and two special meetings (June 24 and June 26), and the renewal of a Class B retail alcohol license for Family Dollar Store of Iowa LLC at 1205 N. Broadway. Council also approved city claims totaling $124,188.62. Those motions passed unanimously among the members present.
On personnel matters, the council approved Resolution #2024-34 setting the wage for a new City of Red Oak employee, Patrolman Ethan Stewart; the council subsequently administered his oath of office. The council later approved Resolution #2024-35, which sets wages for non-union city employees for fiscal year 2025. Both resolutions passed without opposition among members present.
The council approved temporary closures tied to community events: a parking-lot closure for the Red Oak Arts Destination (ROAD) mural project (June 30–July 18, 2024) and a street closure request from the Red Oak Police Department for National Night Out on Aug. 6, 2024. Both motions carried unanimously among the present council members.
The meeting included a number of reports and announcements: Mayor Silvius updated the council on work related to an EPA Community-wide Assessment Grant and noted ongoing coordination with Terracon on the application; a groundbreaking for the Woodland Hills II subdivision was scheduled for July 8 at 11 a.m.; and staff noted an upcoming public DNR/SWIPCO flood plain work session on July 18 at 6 p.m. The agenda also listed interviews for code-enforcement and city-administrator positions and discussion of attendance at the Iowa League of Cities conference (Sept. 18–20).
The meeting adjourned at 7:00 p.m. The council did not take any votes that were recorded as failing or tabled during the session.
