South Bloomfield police report 1,681 calls in May and council asks chief to pursue cadet program

Police Chief Michael Maynard told the Village of South Bloomfield Council on June 1 that the department received 1,681 calls for service in May, resulting in eight arrests, 111 citations, eight accident reports and 53 incident reports.

"1681 calls for service, 8 arrests, 111 citations, 8 accident reports, 53 incident reports," Chief Maynard said as he reviewed monthly statistics and described officer training plans. He said Officer Kyle McCoy led a recent negligent-homicide investigation and has expressed interest in pursuing detective training.

Maynard proposed two training and recruitment initiatives for the department: a summer active-shooter training at the elementary school and a cadet program in partnership with the Ohio State Highway Patrol. He discussed options the council could consider for the cadet program, including drafting a contract that would require a period of employment with the village or arranging weekly ride-alongs so cadets could familiarize themselves with department protocols.

Council members agreed Chief Maynard should consult the village attorney to draft or review any contract language related to a cadet sponsorship. No formal action or funding for the cadet program was taken at the meeting.
