Canton council trims preliminary budget, delays utility-rate decision to November

The Canton City Council on Oct. 9 received a preliminary budget review from Clerk Anne Koliha, who said city staff have pared costs and reduced the proposed 2025 tax levy to 7% so far and will continue to seek further reductions.
Koliha told the council she presented four options for increases to water and sewer rates for 2025; the utility committee asked that discussion and any decision be continued to the November council meeting rather than taking action at the Oct. 9 session. No rate was adopted at the meeting.
Koliha also said the city will schedule a special meeting to canvass the general election and plans to hold that meeting on Nov. 13 before the regular council meeting. She noted that at the November meeting the council will include certification of unpaid charges to the city for approval as special assessments to property taxes.
The minutes record no roll-call votes on budget or rates at the Oct. 9 meeting; the discussion was described in the clerk’s report and the council directed staff to continue cost-trimming and rate analysis.
