Reinbeck council closes hearing, gives first reading to small utility-rate increases

The Reinbeck City Council closed a public hearing on proposed utility-rate changes at 6:05 p.m. May 4 after hearing no written or oral comments and then gave the ordinances their first reading.
Mayor Jamie Eiffler opened a hearing at 6:03 p.m. on Ordinance #2026-06OR, repealing the current water service-rate section and adopting new water rates that would increase by 2 percent, and Ordinance #2026-07OR, repealing the current garbage and recycling services section and increasing garbage and recycling rates by $0.50 each. Councilmember Wambold moved to close the hearing; the motion passed with five ayes and the hearing was closed at 6:05 p.m.
Following the hearing, Mayor Eiffler introduced both ordinances for their first consideration. Councilmember Johnson moved that the ordinances be given their first consideration and that the first reading be adopted; the motion was seconded by Councilmember Trepp. A roll-call vote recorded Wambold, Pease, Johnson, Trepp and Bueghly voting aye, and the motion carried.
Council also voted to schedule the second reading of Ordinance #2026-06OR and Ordinance #2026-07OR for June 1, 2026.
The measures at first reading adjust routine utility charges; no public testimony was recorded at the hearing. The city provided the proposed percentage and per-unit changes during the hearing: a 2% increase to water rates and a $0.50 increase to garbage and recycling fees. The ordinances remain at first reading and will return for final consideration on June 1.
