Planning commission cancels July 14 meeting; hears reports on signage, water supply and affordable housing

At its June 23 meeting the Albemarle County Planning Commission voted to cancel the July 14 meeting after staff reported there were no remaining agenda items; the commission set its next regular meeting for July 28.

Committee updates included a report from the Historic Preservation Committee on a draft program to add historic signage around the county; the committee plans to seek Board of Supervisors funding for implementation. The Cros CAC reported on a Rivanna Water & Sewer Authority presentation noting drought conditions and a projected supply horizon around 2045 without capacity improvements; RWSA representatives and commissioners discussed treatment approaches including use of activated-charcoal filtration for emerging contaminants.

Commissioners also heard an extensive update on the Southwood affordable-mobile-home redevelopment, which presenters said has maintained high resident retention and used strategies such as on-site relocation assistance and larger storage structures to accommodate residents’ needs. Commissioners said the Southwood project stands as an example of affordable-housing practice the county may seek to replicate.

Administrative items: the commission approved a modest salary increase for planning commissioners previously adopted by the Board of Supervisors, noted recent Board actions (including adoption of riparian buffer protection standards on June 17), and discussed attendance planning for an upcoming training retreat in Danville.
