Canton council approves preliminary 2025 tax levy after USDA Rural Development funding notice

The Canton City Council on Sept. 11 approved Resolution #2024-13 establishing the city’s 2025 preliminary tax levy and acknowledged a notice of funding approval from USDA Rural Development for a planned streets project, Clerk Anne Koliha reported.
Koliha reviewed draft budgets for the General Fund, Water Fund and Sewer Fund and said the 2025 estimates include loan payments tied to the streets project. She told the council the city had received a letter of conditions from USDA Rural Development and had returned it to obligate the funds.
Council members did not set final levy targets at the meeting; Koliha asked for guidance on which planned projects to include in the final budget and for a goal on lowering the budget and tax levy for 2025. Mayor Nordsving moved to adopt the preliminary levy resolution; Jen Dowling seconded and the motion carried.
The action advances the formal budget process; the council will consider final levy and budget adoption at a later meeting once staff incorporates project priorities and funding obligations.
